Orthopaedic Appliances
Orthopaedic appliances, also called orthotics, are specialized devices to support or help weakened or abnormal joints or limbs. They include:

  • custom footwear
  • back braces and
  • wrist, foot, ankle, or knee braces

Casts are not considered to be an appliance.

ORTHOPAEDIC APPLIANCES ARE USED TO:

  • support injured joints and prevent joint injury
  • correct and support weak or deformed extremities
  • correct abnormal curves in the spine or
  • provide back support and prevent back injury

The need for an orthotic is determined for the patient by a team that may include the doctor who prescribes the appliance, a physiotherapist, and an orthotist (a licensed specialist who designs and fits the orthotic).

Orthotic appliances are designed to increase your function and decrease your pain. They are highly effective when used correctly.
