Liposuction is one of the most popular plastic surgery techniques in the country. It reduces fat deposits that have not responded to diet and exercise measures. Liposuction is NOT used as a weight loss method. It is best for someone who is at, or near, his or her ideal weight. It is commonly done for people who have been unable to reach their desired appearance. Liposuction may be performed in nearly any area of the body. Depending on the number of areas chosen, the procedure can take up to two hours.
To begin the procedure, a half-inch incision is made to insert a thin tube. The tube is moved back and forth under the skin while high vacuum suction removes small pieces of the fat. After surgery, tight-fitting elastic gauze is sometimes placed over the area. This helps the skin shrink and conform to the new shape. A corset-like garment may also be used to minimise swelling and bruising. The person normally returns home the same day.
Light activity is allowed in a day or two, but strenuous activity is restricted for a couple of weeks. Sometimes there is numbness with minor pain. The bandages are removed within two weeks. A long-legged girdle may be required after that for a month or more to help the skin shrink further.
Liposuction can remove exercise and diet resistant fat to provide a more pleasing overall shape. There are a few things to consider before deciding to have the procedure. If skin dimpling exists before the procedure it will likely exist after as well. There is a chance the skin will look rippled. The skin may sag permanently if it is unable to shrink to the new shape.
Liposuction is usually safe in the hands of an experienced and board certified physician. Rarely, infections may occur. This can be a serious complication as infections in fatty tissues are difficult to treat. Be sure to carefully weigh the benefits and risks before deciding to have cosmetic surgery.
Cosmetic surgery does not usually qualify for rebates from Medicare or Private Health insurance.
