The quality of your sex life is important at every age. One problem that can be difficult to talk about is painful sex. There are many physical as well as emotional causes of this pain. There are also several types of pain.
Some women feel pain at the vulva or opening of the vagina. Even a touch in this area can cause pain. This can happen when an infection of the area causes the skin to be very sensitive. Usually this can be treated with creams or tablets of a medication for the specific infection. This type of pain can also be caused by dryness in this area, a common problem while breast-feeding and during and after menopause. There are many gels without harmful perfumes that can be used weekly or with sex. These can be purchased at your local pharmacy. A pharmacist can assist in selecting a product. If left untreated, vulval pain can be so frightening that another form of pain occurs. The muscles at the opening will start to tighten before the pain happens. This causes more pain and even closes off the opening in fear. There are exercises that can help to relax this area. Even if there is minor pain, it should be evaluated by a doctor. Pain can also be felt deep within the vagina during sexual intercourse. This can be caused by many problems, such as: - infection in the birth canal or in the female organs
- endometriosis, a painful disease affecting the uterus and other organs
- retroverted uterus
- skin thickenings that can divide the female opening or
- injury to the vulva or vagina, caused by, for example, childbirth, rape or sexual abuse.
Treatment for pain during intercourse will depend on the cause of the pain. Treatment can include counselling, medications, or surgery. If you have any questions or concerns about painful intercourse, contact your doctor. Article #7156 Copyright (c) 2002 McKesson. All Rights Reserved. |
