Bunions
A bunion is a swelling near the end of the joint in the foot that attaches to the big toe. The foot bone moves outward, forcing the big toe inward. This movement causes swelling, pain, and eventually a bony growth. Severe bunions can become very painful, hindering a person's ability to walk. Bunions are usually an inherited condition.

Shoes need to be properly fitted with adequate width and appropriate length. Poorly fitted shoes, narrow, tight or high-heeled shoes will aggravate bunions. Women are more prone to problems with bunions than men.

Bunion treatment includes wearing good shoes that follow the shape of the foot, provide ample toe room, and have a low heel. This decreases pressure on the area and often helps to reduce or eliminate pain. Wearing open-toe shoes will also help. Massaging and soaking your feet in warm water can relieve some of the discomfort. Severe cases may require surgery to relieve pain and improve the foot's appearance. If bunion pain bothers you every day, see your doctor.
