Today's society is fast paced. People seem to be constantly on the run with little time to prepare meals, let alone sit down and eat one. The rapid growth in fast food restaurants is a testimony to our hectic lifestyles. It is estimated that half of the meals we eat are outside the home.

So, is this a problem? We don't know. We do know, however, that we, as a nation, are getting heavier and obesity is currently at an all time high. We also know that when people take the time to pay attention to what they eat, they tend to make healthier choices.

A conscious effort must be made to move out of the fast track. Part of the change process includes setting new health goals, committing to one relaxed mealtime each day with the family, and making healthy food choices. Complement mealtimes with enjoyable discussions that help relationships grow. Slow down. Meals should not be rushed.

Set a positive and healthy example for your children. Talk to them about their food choices. Explain the importance of healthy eating. Show them how to share in the preparation of meals.

If you must eat away from home often, make healthy choices. Take your lunch or snack with you. Go to restaurants or convenience food stores that provide healthy choices, such as skim milk, fresh fruit, and sandwiches made with turkey or other low-fat meat. Eat salads with low-fat or fat-free dressing. Avoid fried foods and snacks that are high in fat.
